Brief Series: Kellogg’s Global Democracy Conferences convene global scholars, policymakers and activists on a yearly basis to address urgent challenges to democracy. In two pages, the GDC Conference Briefs aim to capture key insights shared by expert panelists in the conference sessions, as well as the recent literature on democratization. The Authoritarian Collaboration Index (AuthCollab Index) is the first fully automated database tracking transnational collaboration between authoritarian regimes, authoritarian-leaning governments, and authoritarian-leaning opposition parties worldwide. Using NLP, LLMs, and high-frequency open-source monitoring, it updates daily with near-real-time data on 148 actors across seven collaboration categories, drawn from roughly 400 million sources in over 100 languages since January 2024.

Description: When a sitting leader (or governing party) chips away at democracy — weakening courts, muzzling the press, tilting the rules — and then runs to stay in power, do voters throw them out? This page and dataset lets you explore the elections behind that question. We gathered 105 such elections across 63 countries between 1995 and 2024, and recorded who ran, how the vote turned out, and whether the leader was returned to office or defeated.

The Democratic Erosion Event Dataset (DEED) records discrete events related to democratic erosion and autocratic consolidation across countries and over time. The current version (v7) of DEED includes 23,421 events in 156 countries between 2000 and 2023. We track 4 different types of events: precursors to erosion; symptoms of erosion; resistance to erosion; and destabilizing events. We are currently developing a U.S.-only version of our DEED dataset to track and categorize threats to democracy and resistance to them across presidential administrations from 2000 to today. We will also track how right- and left-leaning media differentially report on erosion events to capture partisan agreement and discord over democratic backsliding.
